Dermatitis is one of the most commonly treated skin condition today. A person having dermatitis develops red, itchy bumps on the skin which can become severe and painful at times. In severe cases, the bumps may turn into blisters having fluid inside it. Dermatitis is usually classified into two types – the irritant contact dermatitis and allergic contact dermatitis. The former type is more common as compared to the latter one, which is mainly a skin reaction to an allergen. There are some dermatitis treatment methods, and you should get in touch with a dermatologist if the situation becomes severe.
What are the causes of Dermatitis?
Dermatitis has a number of causes and depends on the type of skin and other factors. Irritant contact dermatitis is caused when your skin comes in contact with any substance that irritates your skin, i.e. it slowly damages the outer layer of your skin. Some common irritants of this dermatitis type include –
- Detergents and soaps
- Oils
- Hard water
- Antiseptics
- Disinfectants
- Acids or alkalis etc.
Therefore, exposure to one of these (or any other) irritants might trigger the damage of your skin’s outer layer and cause irritant contact dermatitis.
On the other hand, allergic contact dermatitis is caused due to an abnormal reaction of your immune system when you come in contact with a certain substance. When the immune system reacts abnormally, it starts attacking the healthy cells of your body instead of the weak ones. This causes the red, itchy swells and bumps on your skin.
However, one thing to note is that when your immune system reacts to a particular allergen for the first time, your body only becomes sensitive to it. It is only after repetitive contacts with that particular allergen that your immune system develops a reaction to it and red, itchy bumps start appearing on your skin.
Some common symptoms of dermatitis
In dermatitis, a person’s skin develops red, itchy bumps on the surface due to damaging of the outer layer of the skin. These bumps become quite red hot and itchy when the situation becomes severe. The itchiness may increase with the severity of the condition and often a burning sensation is produced in cases of severe dermatitis.
People who develop dermatitis are prone to have dry skin which is often hot, especially in and around the area affected by dermatitis. Dermatitis is also characterised by fluid-filled blisters that leave oozes and leaves scales or crusts on your skin. In such a scenario, it is always advisable to get in touch with a dermatologist near you for effective treatment.
Prevention Tips
Probably the best way to avoid dermatitis to develop or to keep its severity under control is by limiting the contact with the allergen or irritant that caused your skin to develop the bumps. Some of the other ways by which you can prevent dermatitis are –
- Clean your skin often and if your skin comes in contact with an allergen or irritant, cleanse the affected area with warm water and soap.
- Wear protective clothing to limit the contact your skin has with the allergens or irritants that cause dermatitis.
- You can also use barrier creams as a skin barrier that protects your skin from the harmful irritants and allergens that may cause your skin to develop dermatitis.
Treatment methods
There are a number of dermatitis treatment methods available, and most dermatologists prescribe corticosteroid lotions be applied on the affected area. In cases of more severe dermatitis, dermatologists prescribe oral corticosteroids or anti-histamine drugs to control the symptoms of dermatitis. However, these drugs are powerful and may have an adverse impact on your health, especially in cases of prolonged treatment with these drugs.
On the other hand, our specialists at HP Dermatology Centre have a number of homeopathic medications on offer that have no side effects on your body and are more effective in treating dermatitis.
